All National Guard in D.C. now armed after deadly attack near White House

What they're saying: "I can confirm that everybody in D.C. is now armed," Pentagon press secretary Kingsley Wilson said Tuesday.

• "And a lot of our D.C. National Guardsmen are now also doing joint patrols with members of the police department here in D.C. Their safety is, of course, top of mind, and we will continue to make sure that they're able to do their jobs," she said.
• "We will not lose sight of our mission. This targeting will only embolden our resolve. Our warriors are strong, and we will not back down until our capital and our cities are secure."

By the numbers: Over 2,200 National Guardsmen are deployed to D.C., down from a peak of 2,500 earlier this year.

• However, Trump ordered 500 more Guard members to the nation's capital in response to the attack Wednesday afternoon.

State of play: The attack was allegedly carried out by an Afghan national who arrived in the U.S. in 2021 following the U.S. troop withdrawal from Afghanistan.

• The suspect once worked for the CIA, and arrived under then-President Biden's "Operation Allies Welcome" program, which sought to relocate and provide opportunities in America for Afghan refugees who would be targeted in their home country for their work with American forces.

• The alleged shooter's heritage spurred the administration to crack down on migration from several countries, and prompted some hardline Republican lawmakers to call for the deportation of all Muslims, as Axios' Andrew Solender previously reported.

Zoom out: Wilson said the White House is working on funeral arrangements for slain Specialist Sarah Beckstrom, 20, but declined to offer any details about a potential burial at Arlington National Cemetery.

• Her colleague, 24-year-old Andrew Wolfe, is still recovering in the hospital.
