Trump administration sues California over anti-ICE mask, ID laws

• The governor's office has vowed to fight the DOJ's lawsuit.

Driving the news: "Federal law enforcement agencies cannot and will not comply with the challenged Acts, which are unconstitutional and recklessly disregard officers' safety and federal operational needs," the filing said about the laws set to take effect Jan. 1, 2026.

• The 16-page complaint, filed in federal court in Los Angeles, claims both laws violate the Supremacy Clause, which bars states from interfering with federal operations.
• "Denying federal agencies and officers that choice would chill federal law enforcement and deter applicants for law enforcement positions," the filing said, adding that the measures would curtail surveillance efforts where anonymity is critical.

Of note: Both laws incorporate exceptions, including for undercover operations.

The other side: "If the Trump administration cared half as much about public safety as it does about pardoning cop-beaters, violating people's rights, and detaining U.S. citizens and their kids, our communities would be much safer," Diana Crofts-Pelayo, a spokesperson for Newsom told Axios in a Thursday evening email.

• "We'll see the U.S. Department of Justice in court."

• Representatives for the DOJ did not immediately respond to Axios' request for comment.

Flashback: Trump and Newsom have long clashed over immigration and law enforcement policies.

• Newsom unsuccessfully sued the Trump administration earlier this year to block the deployment of the National Guard to the Los Angeles area.
