President Trump attacked Jewish supporters of Democratic New York City mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani on Tuesday, calling them "stupid" in a last-minute push to influence Election Day turnout.
Why it matters: Trump has a history of insulting Jewish Democrats for their beliefs, making comments that some civil rights groups allege are antisemitic.
What they're saying: "Any Jewish person that votes for Zohran Mamdani, a proven and self professed JEW HATER, is a stupid person," Trump posted on Truth Social on Tuesday.
- Neither the White House nor Mamdani's campaign responded to Axios' request for comment
Driving the news: New Yorkers are expected to elect Mamdani as their next mayor by a cushy margin on Tuesday, even though the president and his MAGA allies have hoped to dismantle Mamdani's multiracial, progressive coalition.
- Mamdani has the support of roughly 28% of Jewish voters, according to polling released Oct. 30 by Marist.
- He leads former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo by 16 points, or 48% to 32% of likely voters, according to the poll.
The other side: "President Trump has repeatedly labeled Jews who do not vote his way as 'disloyal,' 'stupid,' or worse," Amy Spitalnick, CEO of the Jewish Council for Public Affairs, told Axios in an emailed statement.
- She said that the president often divides the Jewish community into "'good' and 'bad' camps ... normalizing antisemitic attacks on those deemed 'bad.'"
- "Treating Jews as political footballs only makes Jews – and all communities – less safe. This is not about partisan politics — it's about the fundamental safety of our communities."
Between the lines: Mamdani would be the first Muslim mayor of the city, and has faced ongoing Islamophobic criticism from those seeking to sink his campaign, including calls to denaturalize his citizenship and deport him.
Zoom out: Trump made similar comments during the run-up to the 2024 presidential election. In September, he told a crowd of Jewish supporters that any Jewish person voting for then-Vice President Kamala Harris "should have their head examined."
- He also attacked Jewish Harris supporters in July, asserting that "if you love Israel or if you're Jewish ... if you vote for a Democrat, you're a fool, an absolute fool."
- In March, his remark that "any Jewish person that votes for Democrats hates their religion" was roundly condemned by Jewish Democrats in Congress, with Rep. Dean Phillips (D-Minn.) calling the comments "revolting."
- The president also sparked antisemitic accusations from Jewish organizations in 2021 when he said Jewish people who support former Presidents Obama and Biden dƒ-on't support Israel.
