Former President Trump called Jewish people who vote for a Democratic president fools in a radio interview Tuesday.
The big picture: Trump, whose comments come as the 2024 election nears against the backdrop of the Israel-Hamas war, has previously landed in hot water for attacks on Jewish Democrats.
Driving the news: Trump claimed during an interview on "Sid & Friends in the Morning" that his opponent in the presidential race, Vice President Kamala Harris, "doesn't like Israel" and "doesn't like Jewish people."
- He went on to say: "If you love Israel or if you're Jewish ... if you vote for a Democrat, you're a fool, an absolute fool."
Host Sid Rosenberg then said to Trump that second gentleman Doug Emhoff is Jewish "like Bernie Sanders is Jewish." Trump could be heard agreeing, saying "Yup, yup."
- "He's a crappy Jew. He's a horrible Jew," Rosenberg continued.
- Trump also took aim at Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, saying, "It's almost like Schumer has become a Palestinian."
- The former president has previously torn into the Democratic leader for his criticism of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
What they're saying: Harris campaign spokesperson James Singer responded to the comments in an emailed statement, saying, "America is better than the fear, hate, and despicable insults of Donald Trump."
- "Vice President Harris believes Americans want a president who unites our country instead of divides it, uses the power of the presidency to help families instead of hurt them, and has a vision for our future, instead of taking us backwards," Singer added.
Flashback: Trump said back in March that "any Jewish person that votes for Democrats hates their religion."
- He was met with a swift and fierce backlash from incensed Jewish Democrats in Congress.
- Republican lawmakers were also uncomfortably trying to navigate those comments.
Catch up quick: Emhoff has made speaking out against antisemitism a priority as second gentleman, and he speaks frequently about his Jewish faith.
- He recently remarked that if Harris is elected, "maybe we'll put a mezuzah on the White House," referring to the parchment containing verses from the Torah that many Jews place in their doorways.
