New York City's mayoral election could mark a turning point in Democratic politics.
Why it matters: Frontrunner Zohran Mamdani (D) has led former New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo in recent opinion polls in the closely watched contest. A win for Mamdani, a Democratic socialist, would signal a generational and ideological shift that could reverberate beyond the Big Apple.
State of play: President Trump endorsed Cuomo on Monday night, and said on Truth Social that a vote for Republican Curtis Sliwa, who is also on the ballot, "is a vote for Mamdani."
- The president doubled down, suggesting that he would withhold federal funding to the city if Mamdani wins. He also called Mamdani's Jewish supporters "stupid."
- Several Democratic leaders who called on then-Gov. Cuomo to resign amid sexual harassment allegations ultimately endorsed Cuomo's mayoral bid.
- Meanwhile, Mamdani has drawn support from prominent progressive figures Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y).
Here's what to know about when to expect results:
What to know about Election Day voting
Polls close at 9pm ET.
- The last day to postmark a mail-in ballot is Election Day, Tuesday, Nov. 4.
- The last day to drop off a ballot in-person to your local board of elections or to any poll site in your county is Election Day, by 9pm.
Who else is running
- New York City voters will also vote for public advocate, city comptroller, city council members, and district attorneys.
- A full list of candidates can be found on the city's Board of Elections website.
What we're watching: Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg, who oversaw a hush-money case against Trump, is seeking re-election.
- Bragg became the first prosecutor to ever convict a former U.S. president after a New York jury found Trump guilty in the case in May 2024.
When results will come in for the NYC mayoral election
Results are expected to come in quickly. However, declaring a winner might take days if it's a tight race.
- 90% of votes were counted as of 10:30pm during June's Democratic primary race between Mamdani and Cuomo.
Flashback: In the 2024 presidential election, New York City's election night tabulation ended at 12:25 a.m. ET with about 90% of total ballots counted, according to the Associated Press.
