Trump brokered Netanyahu's invitation to Gaza peace conference in Egypt

• Leaders or senior officials from more than two dozen countries are expected to participate in the summit.
• Among them are the leaders of France, Germany, the U.K., Italy, Canada, Qatar, the UAE, Jordan, Turkey, Pakistan and Indonesia.

Behind the scenes: Netanyahu's potential trip to the Sharm el-Sheikh summit was conceived of during his ride with Trump from Ben Gurion Airport to Israel's parliament in Jerusalem, the Knesset, according to a source familiar with the details.

• When Trump spoke with Axios from Air Force One hours earlier, he didn't know that Netanyahu hadn't been invited to the summit and said the Egyptians were the ones responsible for the invitations.
• During the ride in his presidential limo, "the Beast," Trump told Netanyahu he should attend. A source familiar with the conversation said Netanyahu agreed.

The intrigue: Trump then called the Egyptian president and asked him to invite Netanyahu to the summit. Netanyahu and Sisi had not spoken since the start of the war in Gaza.

• Shortly afterwards, though, Sisi called Netanyahu and extended the invitation, which Netanyahu accepted.

But later on Monday morning, Netanyahu's office released a statement thanking Trump for the invitation but saying "he would not be able to attend due to the proximity of the holiday."

The latest: All 20 live Israeli hostages were released by Hamas on Monday morning.
