Arby's is turning steak into a finger food with its nationwide debut of Steak Nuggets — "hand-cut, bite-sized morsels of steak."
Dig in: The Atlanta-based chain known for "the meats" is attempting to carve out a new niche in the chicken-nugget-and-tender dominated world of quick bites.
The new seasoned nuggets are now available at restaurants nationwide for a limited time.
- They come in a 5- or 9-count, as a Steak Nugget Sandwich and a Steak Nugget Bowl over white cheddar mac and cheese.
What they're saying: Arby's created the nuggets because steak has been inconvenient to eat on the go, Jeff Baker, Arby's chief marketing officer, said in a statement.
- "Two of America's favorite foods — nuggets and steak — combined to create Arby's Steak Nuggets. No knife needed, fork optional," Baker said.
The big picture: Fast-food chains are betting on portable protein — like Wendy's new Tendys chicken tenders — as on-the-go eaters crave something meatier.
- Protein is also hot — even Starbucks is adding protein lattes to the menu along with protein cold foam.
Kelly's taste test: I tried the new Steak Nuggets on Monday and caught a whiff of steak before even opening the container.
- The pieces were pink inside and had a lot of flavor — especially dipped in Arby's barbecue sauce (though ketchup worked too).
By the numbers: A five-piece order packs 340 calories, 17 grams of protein and 27 grams of fat, according to Arby's nutritional information.
- Prices vary by location but the five-piece order costs $5.29 Atlanta, $6.99 in New York City and $7.19 in San Diego.
