A new NFL season opens the door for players like Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce to make history.
The big picture: A large part of sports fandom is watching players rewrite the record books.
Here are the milestones at stake during the 2025-2026 NFL season:
Breaking barriers
Sixteen Black quarterbacks are expected to start in Week 1, breaking the record of 15 set last year.
Flashback: This comes after two Black starting quarterbacks, Mahomes and Jalen Hurts, started in the Super Bowl for the first time in history.
Touchdowns and tush pushes
Mahomes, the Kansas City Chiefs quarterback, is three touchdown passes away from surpassing Hall of Famer Peyton Manning (293 touchdown passes) for the most touchdown passes by a player in his first nine seasons, including the postseason, in NFL history.
- The three-time Super Bowl champion, who turns 30 years old on Sept. 17, can also pass Miami Dolphins legend Dan Marino (245 touchdown passes) for the most regular-season touchdown passes by a player under age 30.
If Hurts, Super Bowl LIX MVP, rushes for 10 touchdowns this season, he will become the first quarterback in NFL history with at least that number in five career seasons.
- The NFL owners' decision not to outlaw the Philadelphia Eagles' famous "tush push" helps make this feat achievable.
Hot hands
Taylor Swift's fiancé Kelce needs three touchdown receptions to become the fourth tight end all-time with at least 100 career touchdown receptions, including the playoffs.
Justin Jefferson needs five catches in Week 1 to become the youngest player all-time to reach 500 career receptions.
- The Minnesota Vikings wide receiver will be 26 years, 84 days when his team plays the Chicago Bears on Monday Night Football.
Las Vegas Raiders tight end Brock Bowers needs 787 receiving yards to surpass Mike Ditka (1,980 receiving yards) for the most receiving yards by a tight end in his first two seasons in NFL history.
With 90 catches, Detroit Lions wideout Amon-Ra St. Brown would become the first player in NFL history to accomplish the feat in each of his first five seasons.
Sack stars
Defensive Player of the Year Myles Garrett needs six sacks to surpass Hall of Famer Reggie White (108 sacks) for the most sacks by a player under age 30 since 1982, when the individual sack became an official statistic.
- The Cleveland Browns star has 102.5 career sacks and turns 30 years old on Dec. 29.
Micah Parsons can become the fifth player with at least 65 sacks in his first five seasons, joining White (81) and Derrick Thomas (66) as well as J.J. Watt (74.5) and T.J. Watt (72).
- Parsons has 52.5 career sacks entering 2025.
