Trump's redistricting war heats up as Texas, California feuds escalate

Driving the news: California Republicans asked the state Supreme Court on Tuesday to pause Newsom's redistricting "trigger" measure to give the public time to review the proposal.

• Following Texas Republicans' redistricting attempt, Newsom had threatened to move forward with a legislation that would let voters approve a new district map this November.
• Dozens of Texas Democrats who left the state in protest on August 3 returned on Monday. Their departure postponed the vote on Republicans' new map, which is slated for a vote on Wednesday.

Zoom out: Other governors of the countries' bluest enclaves opposed Texas' moves, with some floating the idea of changing the district maps of their own state.

• Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker stood by Texas Democrats who came to his state after skipping the vote. Illinois has long been a haven for other Democratic state lawmakers who flee their states.
• "We are at war," New York Gov. Kathy Hochul said at a press conference, adding that Democrats have "no choice" but to pursue a constitutional amendment to authorize new maps — though it wouldn't appear on the ballot until 2027 at the earliest.

The intrigue: In Wisconsin, Democrats are seeking to redraw the state's congressional maps before 2026 midterms via state courts.

The other side: The red states are also pitching their own measures.

• Missouri lawmakers have been preparing for a special session on congressional redistricting, which the state's governor has not yet greenlit.
• Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis and other state lawmakers have also expressed enthusiasm for redistricting.

Catch up quick: In Texas, Trump has encouraged Republicans to embark on a redistricting project that he's said could net the party as many as five seats.

• After the Democrats returned to the state, Trump said in a Truth Social post, "Please pass this Map, ASAP."
• Vice President JD Vance has also urged red states to take "decisive action" to ramp up pressure on the redistricting fight.
