Ikea coming to some Best Buy stores — minus the meatballs

Best Buy and Ikea are working together to open 10 small "shop-in-shop" locations in Florida and Texas later this year, the two companies said Thursday.

Why it matters: This move marks the first time Ikea products will be sold inside another U.S. retailer, which is a shift from the Swedish brand's model.

For Best Buy, it's another step to expand its presence in the home-goods market.

The big picture: Don't expect to find Ikea's cafeteria or winding showroom layout inside these stores.

No Swedish meatballs: While Ikea's iconic meatballs help define the full-store experience, these new mini‑installations are strictly planning centers and don't include dining.
No maze‑style showroom: These Best Buy "shops" are compact design centers and not the sprawling Ikea maze of staged rooms and showrooms.

Zoom in: These mini‑showrooms — each roughly 1,000 square feet—will allow customers to plan kitchens, storage or laundry spaces with Ikea design assistance and Best Buy's appliance and tech offerings, the companies said.

Of note: Two locations — the Lakeland and Alamo Ranch Best Buy stores — will also be Ikea pick-up locations where shoppers will be able to pick up most items ordered online for free.
