Trump confirms U.S. gave Iran a proposal for a nuclear deal

Driving the news: Earlier this week, the Trump administration gave Iran a proposal for a nuclear deal, Axios reported.

• It was the first time since the nuclear talks started in early April that White House envoy Steve Witkoff presented such a proposal to the Iranians.
• Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi took the proposal back to Tehran for consultations with Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, President Masoud Pezeshkian, and other top officials.
• The U.S. is still waiting for the Iranian response. A fifth round of nuclear talks hasn't been scheduled yet.

What he is saying: "They have a proposal. They know they have to move quickly or something bad is gonna happen," Trump told reporters on Air Force One as he left Abu Dhabi back to Washington on Friday.

The other side: Araghchi responded to Trump's comment on his X account and claimed Iran has not received any "written" proposal from the U.S. or from the Omani mediators.

• "The messaging we—and the world—continue to receive [from the U.S.] is confusing and contradictory", He said.
• Araghchi stressed that if the U.S. respects Iran's rights and lift sanctions there will be a nuclear deal.
• "Mark my words: there is no scenario in which Iran abandons its hard-earned right to enrichment for peaceful purposes...we ALWAYS welcome dialogue based on mutual respect and ALWAYS reject any diktat," he wrote.
