Exclusive: Trump gets $5B investment pledge from packaging magnate

• Trump regards increasing domestic manufacturing as "critical to U.S. national security" and he's imposed tariffs in part to encourage companies to re-shore their manufacturing and create U.S. jobs, according to an April 2 White House fact sheet.
• However, Axios' Ben Berkowitz notes since that statement there have been plant closures in the wake of economic uncertainty from tariff threats, including reports of auto makers pausing production at some factories and laying off workers.

Driving the news: Pratt made the pledge ahead of Trump's "Invest in America" White House summit on Thursday, which the Australian billionaire will attend, along with other top executives from companies including Nvidia, Johnson & Johnson and Eli Lilly.

• "To make America great again we need to make in America again," said the U.S. permanent resident, who paid for an ad in the New York Times to congratulate Trump in January as the president prepared to take office for a second time.

• "That's why I'm proud to support the president's call to reindustrialize America and again make the U.S. the manufacturing powerhouse of the world."
