Chipotle plans to open its first restaurant in Mexico

• Taco Bell and Domino's ended up closing all their locations after failing to win over locals.

Zoom in: Chipotle announced in a news release that it had signed a development agreement with restaurant operator Alsea to open restaurants in Mexico.

• The California-based chain said it will also look at "additional expansion markets" in the region.
• "We are confident that our responsibly sourced, classically-cooked real food will resonate with guests in Mexico," Nate Lawton, Chipotle chief business development officer, said in a statement.
• "The country's familiarity with our ingredients and affinity for fresh food make it an attractive growth market for our company," Lawton said.

Chipotle restaurant expansion

Zoom in: Chipotle operates 3,700 globally — with the majority in the U.S. —and has plans to open between 315 and 345 new restaurants this year.

• The company's long-term target is to operate 7,000 locations in the U.S. and Canada.

By the numbers: Chipotle's existing international portfolio of owned and operated restaurants includes:

• 58 locations in Canada
• 20 United Kingdom restaurants
• Six locations in France and two in Germany

Chipotle and the Alshaya Group currently operate three restaurants in Kuwait and two in the United Arab Emirates.
