The U.S. Secret Service shot an armed man near the White House around midnight on Sunday, the agency said in a statement.
The big picture: While there has been no reported threat to President Trump, the Secret Service has been under a microscope since two assassination attempts sent shockwaves through the 2024 election.
- Trump was not at the White House at the time of the confrontation. He is spending the weekend at Mar-a-Lago in Florida.
The latest: Andrew Dawson, 27, of North Manchester, Indiana, "was placed under arrest" for carrying a pistol without a license, carrying a rifle or shotgun outside a home or business and possession of a prohibited weapon (possession of a BB gun), a Metropolitan Police Department spokesperson said Monday.
- "He is currently hospitalized," the spokesperson added.
- The MPD did not immediately respond in the evening to Axios' request for comment on his condition.
Driving the news: On Saturday, local police reported "a suicidal individual" who may have been traveling to the nation's capital from Indiana, according to a statement shared by Secret Service spokesperson Anthony Guglielmi.
- Members of the Secret Service located the person's parked vehicle near the White House and spotted a man nearby on foot matching the description.
- When officers approached, the man brandished a firearm, prompting Secret Service to fire shots in an "armed confrontation," the statement said.
- The man was transported to an area hospital. No Secret Service personnel were reported injured, according to the agency.
What's next: D.C.'s Metropolitan Police Department will lead the investigation.
