House Republicans press ahead with budget vote amid revolt

The House is voting on Republicans' budget resolution Tuesday evening after persistent opposition from right-wing deficit hawks forced a delay.

Why it matters: Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) called the vote after he and his deputies spent the day trying to convince reticent Republicans to back their proposal — a critical first step toward passing President Trump's massive fiscal agenda.

Democratic Whip Katherine Clark's office accused Republicans of "trying to jam through" their budget blueprint after assuring Democrats there wouldn't be additional votes Tuesday night.
Johnson commands just a 218-215 majority, meaning he can only afford to lose a few votes from his side as Democrats lock arms in opposition to the GOP budget resolution.
A handful of Republicans said Tuesday they are opposed to the measure, with others refusing to commit to voting for it.

The big picture: The House resolution would allow for $4.5 trillion in tax cuts, a $4 trillion debt ceiling increase and $2 trillion in spending cuts.

The Senate last week adopted its own narrower budget resolution that would provide more than $300 billion dollars for border and defense.
