McDonald's said Tuesday that it is doubling down on breakfast by introducing bagel sandwiches nationwide to celebrate the Egg McMuffin's 50th anniversary.
Why it matters: Breakfast is big business for fast-food chains and expanding menus can boost morning sales.
- McDonald's announced the nationwide availability of bagel sandwiches Tuesday and a series of breakfast specials as it further leans in on value and affordability to entice consumers to eat out.
McDonald's bagel sandwiches available nationwide
The big picture: McDonald's unveiled its popular bagel sandwiches are now available across the country for the first time.
- The sandwiches come in Bacon, Egg & Cheese and Steak, Egg & Cheese.
Zoom in: The company brought back bagel sandwiches last spring after a four-year hiatus at some California restaurants to offset the impact of the state's fast-food workers' wage hike.
- McDonald's told Axios that the bagels were also a regional offering in some markets outside the Golden State, including Houston, St. Louis and Chicago.
National Egg McMuffin Day is Sunday with $1 deal
Dig in: McDonald's made-up holiday, National Egg McMuffin Day, is Sunday, March 2 and there's a morning deal for app users.
- The Egg McMuffin or Sausage McMuffin with Egg breakfast sandwich will cost $1 through the McDonald's app.
- There's also a buy-one-get-one McMuffin deal on McDelivery orders March 3-30, McDonald's said.
Flashback: McDonald's Egg McMuffin debuted nationwide in 1975, a few years after the breakfast sandwich was invented in 1971.
- The company first celebrated National Egg McMuffin Day in 2020, the same day rival Wendy's rolled out its breakfast menu nationwide.
Krispy Kreme available in New York McDonald's
McDonald's and Krispy Kreme's partnership is expanding to participating New York restaurants Tuesday, the burger chain said.
- The doughnuts are available in participating locations in Chicago, Cleveland, Indianapolis, Pittsburgh and Louisville, McDonald's said.
What's next: By the end of 2025, more than half of all McDonald's restaurants in the U.S. will offer Krispy Kreme doughnuts.
- The doughnuts are expected to be available at McDonald's nationwide by the end of 2026.
