GOP lawmaker files measure to impeach judge who blocked Trump

• Several other House Republicans, including Reps. Eli Crane (R-Ariz.) and Andrew Clyde (R-Ga.), are also planning articles of impeachment against judges.
• Trump said last week: "It seems hard to believe that a judge could say, 'We don't want you to do that,' so maybe we have to look at the judges because I think that's a very serious violation."

Driving the news: Van Orden filed a three-page impeachment resolution to impeach Judge Paul Engelmayer, a district court judge from New York who has limited DOGE's access to sensitive Treasury data.

• The measure accuses Engelmayer of abuse of authority, saying he showed "clear bias and prejudice" against Trump and "willfully disregard[ed] established legal precedent" with his ruling.
• A spokesperson for the Southern District of New York did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Between the lines: Successful judicial impeachment is extremely rare — the last one was in 2010 — and is usually for financial corruption or egregious personal misconduct.

• But lawmakers' use of impeachment as a political messaging tool has grown in recent years, with former President Biden and his Cabinet officials facing a flurry of impeachment attempts in the last two years.
