Starbucks serves up free coffee to loyalty members Monday in one of the coffee giant's largest promotions.
The big picture: The post-Super Bowl promotion comes after the Seattle-based company reduced its discounts in recent months under the leadership of new CEO Brian Niccol.
- Niccol said in a Jan. 28 earnings call that the company reduced "the frequency of discount-driven offers, resulting in 40% fewer discounted transactions year-over-year."
Flashback: The chain gave veterans and active military free brewed coffee for Veterans Day.
- In November, Starbucks had its annual Red Cup Day where it gave free reusable cups with a holiday drink purchase.
- The company stopped charging a nondairy milk fee in early November, a move that "brought back lapsed Starbucks Rewards members," Niccol said in the earnings call.
Free coffee at Starbucks Monday
Zoom in: Starbucks Rewards members can get a free 12-ounce hot or iced brewed coffee anytime Monday, Feb. 10 at participating locations.
How it works: Starbucks Rewards members can apply the "Starbucks Monday coupon" in the app for mobile orders or can let the barista know you're redeeming the offer when ordering in the store or the drive-thru.
- There's a limit of one per member and customizations may cost extra.
What they're saying: "We're always looking for opportunities to engage with our Starbucks Rewards members, and Starbucks Monday is a perfect opportunity to invite our customers in for a cup of coffee on us," the company said in a statement to Axios.
Super Sick Monday and Super Bowl Flu
State of play: The UKG Workforce Institute estimates that 22.6 million employees will miss work the Monday after the Chiefs and Eagles face off, Axios' Analis Bailey reports.
- The day after the big game is known as "Super Bowl Flu" or "Super Sick Monday."
Back to Starbucks push
The company has been promoting a "back to Starbucks" campaign to return to its roots to try to reverse a decline in foot traffic and sales.
- Starbucks introduced a new code of conduct, free refills and the return of condiment bars in January.
- It also released limited-time drinks ahead of Valentine's Day despite plans to trim the menu by "roughly 30%" in the fiscal year.
Starbucks Rewards sign up
New Starbucks Rewards members had to join on the app by 11:59pm PT Feb. 9 to get the coupon in the app, the company said.
Yes, but: Those who join the program on Monday should "see your barista in the store to enjoy a coffee on us," Starbucks said.
Chipotle post-Super Bowl deal
Between the lines: Chipotle Mexican Grill also is offering a special Monday promotion for loyalty members.
- Chipotle said in a news release that its "Extra Sunday" offer will be "the brand's biggest free Guac and Queso Blanco offer ever for Chipotle Rewards members."
