Greenland set to ban foreign political donations amid U.S. takeover concern

• The bill that says it's to "safeguard the political integrity of Greenland" is expected to pass ahead of Greenland's general election that must take place by April 6 because the government holds a majority in the territory's Parliament.

Zoom in: The bill "must be considered in light of the geopolitical interests in Greenland and the current situation ... where representatives of an allied superpower have expressed their interest in taking over and controlling Greenland," per an AFP translation of the text.

• Under the legislation, "parties, including local and youth sections," would not be "allowed to receive contributions from foreign or anonymous donors" — specifically those "who reside or are domiciled outside Greenland."

Context: Trump has been saying since before he took office that the U.S. should take ownership of Greenland.

• Secretary of State Marco Rubio said on "The Megyn Kelly Show" on SiriusXM last week Trump's desire to buy Greenland was in "the national interest" of the U.S.

Zoom out: Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen told reporters in Brussels ahead of talks with other EU leaders she will "never support the idea of fighting allies," but "if the U.S. puts tough terms on Europe, we need a collective and robust response."

• While maintaining Greenland was "not for sale," Frederiksen agreed with the U.S. on security concerns about the Arctic region in the face of threats from Russia and China.
• "If this is about securing our part of the world, we can find a way forward," said Frederiksen, whose government has already announced plans to bolster the region.
