Trump admin to terminate protections for some Venezuelans in U.S.

• In recent years, Venezuelan migrants have fled under the regime of President Nicolás Maduro, and the U.S. until recently deemed the nation too dangerous to return to.

Driving the news: Monday's notice issued from Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem will officially publish in the Federal Register Wednesday and take effect 60 days after that.

• The notice stated that the administration has concluded that Venezuela "no longer continues to meet the conditions" for its 2023 TPS designation, which was meant to be valid until April.
• "[T]he Secretary has determined it is contrary to the national interest to permit the covered Venezuelan nationals to remain temporarily in the United States," the memo read.
• A separate TPS designation is up for renewal in July. It applies to Venezuelan nationals and non-citizens who last lived in Venezuela but were in the U.S. as of March 9, 2021.

Zoom in: Noem's notice said that while "certain conditions for the 2023 TPS designation of Venezuela may continue," there have been "notable improvements" that allow for "these nationals to be safely returned to their home country."

• Termination of the designation is "required because it is contrary to the national interest" to allow the previously protected migrants to stay, the notice added.
• The notice referenced Trump's day one executive order directing Noem to terminate parole programs for Venezuelans, Cubans, Haitians and Nicaraguans.

Context: TPS is a federal program that allows migrants from certain countries to legally live and work in the U.S. while the conditions in their home country are unsafe.

• The Biden administration extended TPS on multiple occasions to Venezuelan migrants, who make up the largest nationality in the program.
• Just before Biden left office, DHS announced it would extend TPS for immigrants from Venezuela, El Salvador, Ukraine and Sudan for 18 months.
• But Noem rescinded that extension for Venezuelans last week, casting hundreds of thousands into limbo.
