Monday is both Inauguration Day and Martin Luther King Jr. Day.
Why it matters: The U.S. Postal Service, stock markets, banks and many schools are closed for the federal holiday, but not because it's the day President-elect Trump is sworn in as the 47th president.
- It's the third such overlap. Former President Bill Clinton's 1997 inauguration was the first, and former President Barack Obama's 2013 ceremony was the second.
When is MLK Day observed?
Flashback: President Reagan signed a bill marking the third Monday of January as Martin Luther King Jr. Day in 1983.
- The holiday was observed for the first time in January 1986 but it was not observed in all states until 2000.
- King's birthday was Jan. 15.
When is Inauguration Day 2025? What time does it start?
Inauguration Day occurs every four years on Jan. 20.
- The 20th amendment to the Constitution states that the term of each elected president begins at noon on Jan. 20 of the year following the election.
Yes, but: If Jan. 20 falls on a Sunday, the inauguration is held Jan. 21.
No mail Monday for Martin Luther King Jr. Day
The U.S. Postal Service and all post offices are closed with no deliveries Monday.
- FedEx says it will have modified services on MLK Day, but its Freight, Office, Critical, and Logistics arms will remain open.
- Most UPS services are closed but limited locations are open.
Stock market, banks closed Inauguration Day
The New York Stock Exchange and Nasdaq are closed for Martin Luther King Jr. Day each year, according to the stock market schedules.
- Most of the nation's banks are closed Monday as they follow the Federal Reserve holiday schedule.
Coldest Inauguration Day
Monday is slated to be cooler than Jan. 20 has been in D.C. in recent decades, Axios' April Rubin reports.
- "It's going to be very cold out there for any folks attending the inauguration," Eric Taylor, a forecaster for the National Weather Service in Sterling, Virginia, told Axios.
- Air temperatures during the day on Monday are expected to be in the low- to mid-20s, Taylor said.
Most schools closed Monday
Zoom in: Most public and private schools will be closed Monday for the holiday, and some others may also be closed due to winter weather related to the polar vortex.
Stores and restaurants open for MLK Day
Most stores and restaurants are open for the holiday and will hold sales over the holiday weekend.
- Costco Wholesale clubs are open for MLK Day despite closing for some other federal holidays.
- Liquidation sales are ongoing at closing Macy's, Kohl's, Big Lots and Party City stores.
