Thursday is the national day of mourning for former President Jimmy Carter, who died Dec. 29 at 100.
The big picture: A state funeral for Carter will take place starting at 10am ET Thursday at Washington National Cathedral in Washington, D.C.

Jimmy Carter national day of mourning
State of play: Days of mourning for presidents are treated as federal holidays with federal offices and agencies closed.
- President Biden declared the day of mourning and issued an executive order closing government departments.
- Carter was the country's longest-living former president and the first to reach 100 years old.
USPS closed Thursday, no mail delivery for Carter
The U.S. Postal Service is closing all post office locations and suspending regular mail delivery Thursday.
- Package delivery will be limited, USPS said.
- USPS will continue to accept and process volume dropped by commercial mailers at mail processing facilities.
- Regular operations will resume on Friday.
Stock markets closed, most banks open
Financial markets, including the New York Stock Exchange and Nasdaq, will be closed Jan. 9.
- SIFMA, the trade association for investment banks and asset managers, is recommending bond markets close early at 2pm ET.
- Unlike federal holidays, most banks are expected to remain open Thursday. Check with your local branch before heading out.
Yes, but: The Office of the Comptroller of the Currency issued a proclamation Wednesday "allowing national banks, federal savings associations, and federal branches and agencies of foreign banks to close offices in areas of California affected by wildfires."
Most schools open Thursday
Most public and private schools will remain open Thursday — though some could be closed because of the powerful winter storm.
- Military schools affiliated with the U.S. Department of Defense Education Activity will be closed, per the department.
IRS gives extra day for returns and payments due Jan. 9
The Internal Revenue Service announced Wednesday that it was granting "taxpayers an extra day, until Friday, Jan. 10, 2025, to file any return or pay any tax originally due on Thursday, Jan. 9."
- "The one-day extension applies to any return required to be filed with the IRS on Thursday, Jan. 9, 2025. It also applies to any required federal tax payment originally due on that day," the IRS said.
