Huffman wins key vote in bitter Natural Resources Committee race

Rep. Jared Huffman (D-Calif.) on Monday won a crucial vote in the brutally contested race for ranking member of the House Natural Resources Committee.

Why it matters: Huffman fired the starting gun last month on a series of challenges to septuagenarian committee leaders by launching an insurgent bid to topple incumbent ranking member Raúl Grijalva (D-Ariz.).

Grijalva eventually withdrew his candidacy, but Rep. Melanie Stansbury (D-N.M.) launched a long-shot bid for the role with Grijalva's backing.
The ensuing race proved to be one of House Democrats' most heated committee leadership contests this year.

Driving the news: House Democrats' Steering and Policy Committee voted to recommend Huffman for the role, according to sources familiar with the matter.

The choice still has to be approved at House Democrats' full caucus meeting – though steering picks are rarely rejected in those votes.
