House Democrats are set to face their most contentious and personal committee battle yet as Rep. Melanie Stansbury (D-N.M.) on Monday jumped into the race to lead Democrats on the Natural Resources Committee.
Why it matters: Stansbury is pitted against Rep. Jared Huffman (D-Calif.), who was running uncontested for the role after incumbent ranking member Raúl Grijalva (D-Calif.) withdrew his reelection bid.
- It is one of three committee fights House Democrats will have to hash out next week as they prepare to take on the Trump administration.
Driving the news: In a letter to colleagues, Stansbury cited Grijalva's support for her, saying she answered his "call to run for this seat after he made the decision to pass the baton last week."
- Grijalva, 76, came under pressure to step aside after a cancer diagnosis that led Huffman, 60, to launch an insurgent challenge against him.
- Huffman had pitched himself as the ideal choice to mount a vigorous resistance against the policies of the incoming Republican trifecta.
- Stansbury, 45, is making a similar pitch, arguing that it is "crucial we have strategic leadership at the helm of our Committees that is focused on the most important battles we will face."
Between the lines: Huffman's defiance of the seniority system and Grijalva's subsequent withdrawal has left bad blood between their two camps.
- Huffman has told colleagues that, rather than wanting to run unopposed, he preferred Stansbury enter the race in the hopes of a decisive victory in his favor, a source familiar with his comments told Axios.
- Stansbury told Axios last week that it is "important to have the discussion about what the committee looks like, how it's led ... and where there are opportunities for change," like having panel's the first woman ranking member.
- Grijalva, she added, was "eager to help support a woman to move into this role."
Zoom in: In addition to Grijalva, Stansbury rolled out endorsements from Reps. Gabe Vasquez (D-N.M.) and Vicente Gonzalez (D-Texas) — both battleground-district centrists.
- Huffman on Monday morning unveiled endorsements from two dozen colleagues, also mostly moderates and swing-district members.
- Sources have previously told Axios that Huffman has commitments from over 140 House Democrats — well over half the caucus.
What to watch: The race for Natural Resources will be decided along with other contested committee fights on Dec. 16 by House Democrats' steering committee.
- Reps. Angie Craig (D-Minn.) and Jim Costa (D-Calif.) are both challenging Agriculture Committee ranking member David Scott (D-Ga.).
- Reps. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) and Gerry Connolly (D-Va.) are running to succeed Oversight Committee ranking member Jamie Raskin (D-Md.).
- Raskin had been challenging Judiciary Committee ranking member Jerry Nadler (D-N.Y.), but Nadler withdrew his candidacy and endorsed Raskin.
