House Democrats are staring down a chain reaction of committee leadership drama in which each explosive development seems to spawn two more in its place.
Why it matters: Even as House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries' (D-N.Y.) senior leadership team has remained largely static, there is growing agitation in his ranks to jettison some of the party's oldest panel leaders.
The latest: Rep. Gerry Connolly (D-Va.) on Tuesday formally launched his bid to replace Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-Md.) as the ranking member of the House Oversight Committee.
- "Oversight Democrats must be an aggressive team focused on defending American democracy from President Trump," Connolly wrote in a letter to Democratic colleagues obtained by Axios.
- Connolly could face a challenge from several other Democrats on the panel, including Reps. Ro Khanna (D-Calif.), Stephen Lynch (D-Mass.) and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.), as Axios previously reported.
Zoom in: One committee fight that appeared to be wrapped up – for Natural Resources committee ranking member – now threatens to burst back open.
- Rep. Melanie Stansbury (D-N.M.) "taking a serious look" at running for the role after "a number of stakeholders reached out," her spokesperson Caroline Sweeney told Axios.
- Ranking member Raúl Grijlava (D-Ariz.) withdrew his reelection bid on Monday amid a challenge from Rep. Jared Huffman (D-Calif.) fueled by concerns about Grijalva's health.
- But Huffman appears to have the inside track: He has commitments from over 140 colleagues, a source familiar with the matter told Axios.
Zoom out: Democrats are engaged in at least two other contested committee fights, each based largely on the septuagenarian incumbent's fitness.
- Raskin is challenging Judiciary Committee ranking member Jerry Nadler (D-N.Y.) after a heavy pressure campaign from colleagues, pitching himself as the more vigorous choice to take on the Trump administration.
- Reps. Jim Costa (D-Calif.) and Angie Craig (D-Minn.) are both running against Agriculture Committee ranking member David Scott (D-Ga.).
Between the lines: It is rare for House Democrats to openly challenge committee leaders, often because it can incur the wrath of leadership.
- But Democratic leadership is maintaining strict neutrality on these committee fights, saying the caucus will work its will.
- Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) has encouraged at least one insurgent, Raskin, as Axios previously reported.
What's next Steering committee Democrats will decide which lawmakers to recommend to the full caucus for ranking posts, with the caucus expected to finalize those selections some time this month.
