House Democrats reject an insurgent leadership bid

• Jeffries and other top Democratic leaders were all reelected by acclamation Tuesday morning.

Driving the news: Dingell defeated Crockett 152 to 59, according to two House members who were at Democrats' closed-door caucus meeting.

• Dingell, who has served in Congress since 2015 and is the widow of longtime Rep. John Dingell, was running for a full term after winning the DPCC chairmanship earlier this year.
• Crockett is going into her second term and has become known as an MSNBC mainstay and fierce partisan brawler with GOP firebrands.

What we're hearing: The lopsided result reflected what many House Democrats said was a rushed and last-minute campaign by Crockett to take down the entrenched Dingell.

• Crockett pitched herself as a master of new media who could help modernize the party following its 2024 election loss.

• But Dingell spent months locking down support from her colleagues, and Crockett failed to make sufficient inroads to dislodge her.

What we're hearing: One House Democrat pointed to Rep. Maxwell Frost's (D-Fla.) election as a DPCC co-chair as evidence that Crockett's loss wasn't a total defeat for efforts to overhaul the party's messaging strategy.

• "There is no question that the caucus understands that we need ... not just different messaging but how we're doing that messaging," the lawmaker said.
