Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-Ohio) is privately telling donors he can win his race if Harris stays within eight percentage points of Trump in the state, according to people familiar with the matter.
Why it matters: That's doable. Trump currently leads Harris by seven in the RealClearPolitics average of Ohio polls.
- Brown leads GOP challenger Bernie Moreno by less than a percentage point in the RCP polling average. The margin's been shrinking all fall.
Zoom out: The 2024 cycle, so far, has been defined by Senate Democrats running well ahead of their presidential candidate and Republican candidates running behind Trump.
- But as election day nears, it's becoming harder for candidates of either party to separate themselves from the top of the ticket.
- This political reality is also confronting Sen. Jon Tester (D) in Montana, where Trump is expected to win by double digits.
- Ditto former Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan (R), who is trying to create his own separation from Trump in Maryland.
