"Eating other things": Trump adds to false claims about Haitian immigrants

• Still, Trump and his allies have doubled down on the claims.

Driving the news: A Latino attendee asked Trump at the town hall if he really believed that "these people are eating the people's pets," per a clip Univision released ahead of the event airing at 10pm ET Wednesday.

• "I was just saying what was reported that's been reported and eating other things, too, that they're not supposed to be," Trump said.

State of play: The Republican presidential nominee earlier made the pet-eating claim at his presidential debate with Vice President Kamala Harris. ABC debate moderator David Muir noted officials said there was no credible evidence to the reports.

• Jose Saralegui, who described himself at the Univision town hall as a registered Republican but an undecided voter, noted as he asked Trump about his baseless claims that "authorities in Springfield, Ohio, have more than one time clarified that the Haitians are not eating their cats and their dogs."
• Yet Trump still wants to "revoke the permit they have to legally reside in this country," Saralegui said, referencing Trump's vow to revoke immigration status for Haitian migrants who are living legally in the U.S. if he's re-elected next month.

• Trump also defended his immigration policies and focus on Springfield as an effort to counter a strain on city resources.
• "If any of that happened, it would be a disaster for you and you wouldn't be happy," he said. "We want to make our people safe and secure and we want to make them happy."
