Clyburn says he will "absolutely" vote to certify a Trump win

• House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) has said he will certify an election victory for Vice President Harris, the Democratic candidate, if it is "free, fair and safe."

What they're saying: Asked by CNN's Dana Bash during a "State of the Union" appearance if he commits to certifying the election even if Trump wins, Clyburn replied, "Absolutely."

• "That is what this country is all about. Have the election, and when the election is over, you put it behind us and move on with trying to continue this pursuit toward a more perfect union," he said.
• "You don't sit around and tell lies about the election or resist the process. You go forward."

Between the lines: Objections to Electoral College slates on Jan. 6, once little more than toothless protests by lawmakers on the losing side, have become potent symbols of election denialism since the Capitol riot in 2021.

• Former President Trump, who vigorously contested his loss to President Biden in 2020, urged his allies in Congress to try to decertify the election and convinced his supporters that it would be possible to do so.

• Trump has already begun to preemptively cast doubt on the 2024 election results, terrifying Democrats who fear a repeat of the violence in 2021.

The intrigue: Like his colleagues who are not ruling out objecting to a Trump win, Clyburn once supported an unsuccessful objection to Republican electors.

• When Rep. Stephanie Tubbs Jones (D-Ohio) and Sen. Barbara Boxer (D-Calif.) filed an objection to President George W. Bush's win in Ohio in 2004, Clyburn was one of 31 House Democrats who voted for it.
