Democrats see attack ad gold mine in Trump's debate comments

• Another told Axios during the debate that the ads are probably being produced "literally right now."

What we're hearing: Democrats in Congress cited multiple comments by Trump that they believe hurt the ex-president and his party:

• He seized on unproven claims that Haitian immigrants in Springfield, Ohio, are eating pets: "So angry. Incoherent. People eating pets?" exclaimed Rep. Greg Landsman (D-Ohio).
• He said the controversial Project 2025 plan has "some good" ideas despite his repeated efforts to distance himself from the conservative blueprint for his potential second term.
• He continued to deny his 2020 loss, which Rep. Hillary Scholten (D-Mich.) called "an affront to Michigan voters and a central reason so many voters I represent are fleeing from Trump and his party."
• He said the Supreme Court had "great courage" to overturn abortion rights under Roe v. Wade, calling it a "great service."
• He said he has "concepts of a plan" when it comes to health care.

What they're saying: One senior House Democrat characterized Harris' debate performance as "OK," saying she was "weaker on the economy" but that Trump "didn't look good on women issues at all."

• Still, the lawmaker added during the debate: "She got under his skin ... He reacted as she wanted about people leaving his rallies and he is totally off balance now."
• Several House Democrats previewed the go-to tagline for Trump's performance: Unhinged. "He's completely unhinged and taking the bait she is laying down," said Rep. Becca Balint (D-Vt.).
• "The 'they're eating dogs in Springfield' thing is not helping them with the whole 'weird' narrative," said Scholten, referring to how Democrats have labeled Trump and his running mate, Ohio Sen. JD Vance.
