Apple debuts new iPhone, Apple Watch models

Here are the biggest things Apple announced on Monday:

iPhone 16

• The base iPhone 16 model adds a new A18 processor and a new camera button designed to improve mobile photography. It also brings over the action button that was previously limited to the higher-end Pro models.
• iPhone 16 comes in a range of new colors and in two screen sizes — 6.1-inch and 6.7-inches for the larger iPhone 16 Plus models.
• The iPhone 16 starts at $799 (and $899 for iPhone 16 Plus).

iPhone 16 Pro

• At the high-end of Apple's phone line, the iPhone 16 Pro comes in four titanium finishes and features bigger batteries, thinner bezels and larger displays, with a 6.3-inch screen on the 16 Pro and a 6.9-inch display on the iPhone 16 Pro Max.
• The iPhone 16 Pro models include the new camera capture button and are powered by a "Pro" version of the A18 chip that offers larger cache memory and other enhancements over the standard chip.
• Also, both iPhone 16 Pro models get improved audio and video capture, along with a 5x zoom, a feature that last year was limited to the larger-screen iPhone 15 Pro Max.
• The iPhone 16 Pro starts at $999, while the Pro Max starts at $1,199, with both Pro and standard iPhone 16 models up for pre-order starting Friday and available on Sept. 20.

Apple Intelligence

• CEO Tim Cook described the iPhone 16 family as the first iPhones designed from the ground up for Apple Intelligence, the generative AI features first previewed at a June developer conference.
• That includes tools for improving emails, work messages and documents; creating custom emoji and finding photos using natural language.
• The first Apple Intelligence features will debut in beta form next month, Apple said.
• However, many Apple Intelligence features will take even longer to arrive, coming in stages over the next year. Apple has also said it won't bring Apple Intelligence to Europe over regulatory concerns.

AirPods

• Cook said Apple is updating its entire line of headphones, which include AirPods and AirPod Pro in-ear buds as well as the over-the-ear AirPods Max headphones.
• AirPods 4 gain spatial audio support and the ability to detect nods and head shakes as yes-or-no responses to Siri as well as a smaller, USB-C charging case. A second AirPods model brings over more AirPods Pro features, including active noise cancellation and conversation awareness.
• The base model AirPods will sell for $129, while the version with noise cancellation is $179. Both can be ordered today, with availability starting on Sep. 20.

• An update to AirPods Pro 2, meanwhile, powers new features for detecting and addressing hearing loss, including a new hearing aid feature for those with mild-to-moderate issues.
• Finally, an updated version of AirPods Max remains at the top of Apple's lineup at the same $549 price.

Apple Watch

• Apple Watch Series 10 features a thinner design along with a larger display and thinner bezels. and an Apple-designed S10 chip with a four-core processor.
• The new generation of wrist-worn wearables comes in jet black, rose gold and silver aluminum. Apple is also adding a new polished titanium line, replacing stainless steel as the higher-end metal option.
• The new watches also allow, for the first time, the ability to play music and other audio through the speaker.
• Apple is adding the ability for the watch to help detect and alert users to their potential sleep apnea. That feature will also work on Apple Watch Series 9 and Ultra 2 models.
• Apple Watch Series 10 starts at $399, with preorders starting today and availability on Sept. 20. Apple Watch Ultra isn't getting a hardware update this year, but will be made available in a new satin black color.
