Liz Cheney says she's voting for Kamala Harris for president

• Cheney has previously said that she will do "whatever it takes" to prevent a second Trump administration.

Driving the news: "As a conservative, as somebody who believes in and cares about the Constitution, I have thought deeply about this," Cheney said during an event at Duke University.

• "Because of the danger that Donald Trump poses, not only am I not voting for Donald Trump, but I will be voting for Kamala Harris."
• "It is crucially important for people to recognize not only is what I just said about the danger that Trump poses something that should prevent people from voting for him, but I don't believe that we have the luxury of writing in candidate's names, particularly in swing states," Cheney said.

The big picture: Cheney had reportedly been eyeing September as the most impactful time to weigh in on the 2024 race, per the Times.

• Former Rep. Adam Kinzinger (R-Ill.), another outspoken critic of the Republican presidential nominee, had a prime-time speaking slot at the Democratic National Convention last month, as Harris is seeking to built a coalition of support across party lines.
• Harris told CNN last week that she would appoint a Republican to her Cabinet if she wins in November.
