The Democratic National Convention kicked off Monday in Chicago with four days and nights of "political choreography."
Why it matters: The convention will honor President Biden and allow Vice President Harris to re-introduce herself to America as the party's nominee.
- The president's speech Monday was seen as a changing of the guard for the Democrats.
- A "celebratory" roll call vote for Harris is set for Tuesday, weeks after she secured the nomination.
When is DNC 2024?
The big picture: The DNC is being held through Thursday, Aug. 22.
- There are sessions and meetings throughout the week, according to the official full convention schedule, but all eyes will be on nighttime events.
Where is the DNC being held?
The latest: Up to 50,000 delegates, media, volunteers and protesters are expected to converge on Chicago for the convention.
- The convention takes place in the United Center, the inside arena which is home to the Chicago Bulls and the Chicago Blackhawks.
Flashback: The last Democratic National Convention held in Chicago was back in 1996 when the party renominated Bill Clinton for president and Al Gore for VP.
- Chicago also hosted one of the most tumultuous conventions in 1968.
What time does the DNC start?
Zoom in: Primetime convention programming will air live from the United Center in Chicago from 7 to 11pm Eastern or 6 to 10pm Central Tuesday through Thursday.
- Times can change. Monday's program ran past midnight Eastern time as the DNC was behind schedule.
DNC speaker schedule times: Tuesday through Thursday
Here are key speakers Tuesday through Thursday and the themes of each day.
Tuesday, "A Bold Vision for America's Future": Former President Obama plus second gentleman Doug Emhoff, with a welcome from Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker.
- Former First Lady Michelle Obama will also take the stage, Axios confirmed.
Wednesday, "A Fight for Our Freedoms": Vice presidential nominee Tim Walz delivers his acceptance speech, preceded by former President Clinton, Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi and Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg (per CNN).
Thursday, "For Our Future": Harris accepts the convention's nomination for president.
DNC speech: Who else is expected to speak
Other speakers for the DNC include Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries.
- Former President Carter's grandson, Jason Carter, is expected to speak on behalf of his grandfather, who has said he hopes to stay alive long enough to vote for Harris.
How to watch DNC on TV
The DNC features four nights of primetime programming.
- All major news networks are broadcasting primetime convention sessions, including CNN, NBC, MSNBC, PBS, CBS, Fox News, C-SPAN and NewsNation.
How to stream the DNC live
State of play: The event will be live streamed on the convention's website and social media platforms, including Instagram, TikTok and YouTube.
- The DNC's YouTube channel has multiple formats of the convention, including a Spanish version and American Sign Language.
- It'll also be available to stream on Amazon Prime Video and TV devices including AppleTV, RokuTV and FireTV, per the DNC.
Between the lines: The party hopes making the stream available via vertical video apps will draw in younger viewers who get most of their news on their phones, Axios' Sara Fischer reports.
