U.S. women's basketball downs Australia to reach gold medal game in Paris

The U.S. women's basketball team defeated Australia 85-64 at Bercy Arena on Friday to advance to Sunday's gold medal game in Paris.

Why it matters: The U.S. women's hoops team, which features Brittney Griner, Diana Taurasi, A'ja Wilson and a host of WNBA All-Stars, has dominated throughout the tournament as it seeks an eighth consecutive gold medal.

Driving the news: The U.S. built an early lead and kept a comfortable cushion throughout the game, leading 45-27 at halftime and 66-40 after three quarters.

Four Americans scored in double figures, led by Breanna Stewart with 16 points and Jackie Young with 14.

What's next: The U.S. women's team will face the winner of France and Belgium, who play Friday afternoon.

The U.S. and France men's teams are set to play in the gold medal game on Saturday.
