At least 6 people died in anti-Maduro protests

• Hundreds have been arrested during the protests, which started Monday.

Catch up quick: The Maduro-aligned electoral commission, CNE, on Monday declared Maduro the winner of the elections without providing a vote tally and despite polls showing opposition candidate Edmundo González Urrutia with a wide lead.

• The opposition coalition says it has evidence González is the winner.
• Venezuela is under autocratic rule, meaning all branches of government are held by Maduro allies.

State of play: Protesters began marching on Monday in several parts of the country but especially in the capital, Caracas.

• Most demonstrations have been peaceful and have featured the common Latin American cacerolazos, the banging of pots and pans as a sign of protest.
• Other protests have involved fires, road blocks and property destruction.

What they're saying: Citing the deaths, González on Tuesday called on authorities to respect Venezuelans' right to protest.

• "You know what really happened on Sunday. Honor your oaths (as public servants) because the Constitution rules over everyone," González said.
• "We Venezuelans want peace and respect for the will of the people."

The Maduro regime said, without evidence, that the protests are a "coupe in progress," per Reuters.

Flashback: At least 124 people were killed during anti-Maduro protests in the spring of 2017, according to the the UN, which found most deaths were attributable to human rights violations by authorities.
