Trump ICE head warns Mexican cartels they could be wiped off "face of the earth"

• Homan, during a fiery speech Wednesday at the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee, blasted the Biden administration for a record number of border crossings over the past few years.
• "This isn't mismanagement, this isn't incompetence, this is by design — it is a choice," Homan said.
• Homan vowed to deport people in the country without authorization and warned that Trump would designate Mexican cartels a "terrorist organization" for their role in getting fentanyl across the border.

The other side: Biden-Harris 2024 Hispanic Media director Maca Casado issued a statement Wednesday: "Nothing spells unity or American values like putting the architect of family separation, Tom Homan, on in primetime during the Republican National Convention."

• "Neither Trump or Tom Homans gives a damn about fixing the immigration system Trump himself broke, but because Trump thinks it's good politics to pick on the most vulnerable."

Catch up quick: Homan served as acting director of ICE from January 2017 through June 2018, when the Trump administration was administering its "zero tolerance" policy at the border.

• That policy required parents to be separated from their children so they could be prosecuted for crossing the border illegally (a misdemeanor on first offense).
• Kids were taken into government custody and often lost in the system, causing a public uproar that led to the administration halting the policy.
