Trump's bid to remove DA in Georgia election case gets later hearing date

A Georgia appeals court panel will hear arguments Dec. 5 in former President Trump's bid to force Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis from the case alleging he illegally sought to overturn the state's 2020 presidential election results.

Why it matters: The hearing date likely pushes any ruling past the 2025 presidential inauguration, and the case would likely be halted if Trump were re-elected president.

The court had originally set an tentative date of Oct. 4 for arguments.

Catch up quick: The judge overseeing the case had ruled in March that Willis could stay on the case provided special prosecutor Nathan Wade, with whom she had a romantic relationship, stepped aside.

Trump had sought to have both Willis and Wade removed from the case, which likely would have halted the prosecution.
Fulton County Judge Scott McAfee allowed Trump to appeal the decision allowing Willis to stay. McAfee said he still intended to proceed with pretrial motions and other matters related to the case.
Trump, who has pled not guilty, and 18 co-defendants are charged with racketeering and election fraud in a bid to overturn President Biden's victory in the state.
