Sen. Rubio tries to distance Trump from Project 2025

• I know nothing about Project 2025," Trump wrote on Truth Social.

What they're saying: "Think tanks do think tank stuff, they come up with ideas, they say things…I like [the] Heritage Foundation. I agree with some of the things they stand for," Rubio said on CNN's "State of the Union" about the plan, which has repeatedly come under fire from Democrats as an extremist playbook to undermine democracy.

• "Donald Trump is running on common sense, on restoring common sense versus the lunacy of the last four years and the far left and the shadow government that now is running our country," Rubio argued.

Catch up quick: Heritage Foundation president Kevin Roberts stoked further fears Tuesday when he warned of a "second American Revolution" that would "remain bloodless if the left allows it to be" on former Trump adviser Steve Bannon's radio show.

• When asked if Roberts' comments caused him discomfort, Rubio said, "He's not running for president, is he?"
• "I mean, our candidate is Donald Trump," he continued. "I didn't see Donald Trump say that."

The bottom line: If enacted, Project 2025 — charted in a 922-page handbook — would dramatically expand executive power and set a foundation for the president to install a federal workforce of ideological loyalists.

• It gained viral attention, which Democrats have capitalized on, but has not been endorsed by the former president.
• But Trump aide John McEntee, the former director of the White House Presidential Personnel Office and a senior adviser for Project 2025, said in April that the campaign and the team behind the project intend to "integrate a lot of our work" this summer, liberal watchdog Media Matters reported.
