Americans are marking the Fourth of July with barbecues, fireworks, travel and shopping.
The big picture: Most of the nation's largest retailers and restaurants are open Thursday with many stores holding sales throughout the holiday weekend.
- The National Retail Federation estimates total food spending for the holiday will be $9.4 billion, a decline from last year's record $9.5 billion.
Costco closed Fourth of July, Walmart, Lowe's open
State of play: Costco Wholesale clubs are closed for the federal holiday, as they are for New Year's Day, Easter, Memorial Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas.
- Competitor wholesale clubs, Sam's Club and BJ's Wholesale, are open Thursday along with department stores, office supply stores, drugstores and grocery stores.
- Some pharmacies are closed on the holiday.
Zoom in: Store hours can vary and many retailers close early Thursday. Some will follow Sunday hours and others close even earlier.
- Trader Joe's stores close at 5pm local time and Aldi stores will close at 4pm Thursday.
What's next: Target will kick off its Circle Week sale this Sunday and the "Walmart Deals" sale starts Monday ahead of Amazon's Prime Day sale (July 16-17).
Car dealers back on CDK Global after cyberattack
Independence Day has historically been a popular day for car shopping.
- In time for the holiday rush most car dealerships are back on CDK Global's software to process auto sales and repairs, the company confirmed to Axios Wednesday.
- On June 19, cyberattacks knocked out CDK Global software, which led some dealerships to revert to using pen and paper to process sales and repairs.
No mail, UPS and FedEx on Fourth of July
The U.S. Postal Service and all post offices are closed with no deliveries Thursday.
Food open Fourth of July: McDonald's, Chick-fil-A, Starbucks and more
Between the lines: For fast food and other chain restaurants, the decision to open on a holiday is often a franchise decision. The majority of the nation's largest chains to be open Thursday but hours can vary.
- Check with your closest location before heading out.
Dig in: National Fried Chicken Day coincides with Independence Day this year.
- Restaurants including KFC and Popeyes are celebrating with specials, which is in addition to the flurry of $5 meal deals at McDonald's, Burger King and other chains.
Stock market, banks closed July Fourth
The New York Stock Exchange and Nasdaq are closed on the holiday and will next be closed on Labor Day, which is on Sept. 2 this year.
- Most of the nation's banks are closed Thursday and follow the Federal Reserve holiday schedule.
