Kate Middleton makes first public appearance since cancer announcement

Kate Middleton, Britain's Princess of Wales, made her first public appearance Saturday since surgery five months ago revealed the presence of cancer.

The big picture: Kate, 42, has undergone preventative chemotherapy since her cancer announcement. While treatment is continuing, her improved health meant she was able to appear in public for the first time since last December.

Zoom in: Crowds lining the streets waved and cheered as Kate went past in a covered carriage with her three children in a military parade marking King Charles' birthday, Reuters reports.

In a rare personal written message Friday, she said she was making good progress but is "not out of the woods."
