A McDonald's spinoff with a focus on beverages over burgers is opening its first location this week.

Driving the news: The fast-food giant announced that the first CosMc's small-format concept restaurant will open near Chicago in Bolingbrook, Illinois.

  • Nine other locations in Texas, across the Dallas-Fort Worth and San Antonio metro areas, are expected to open by the end of 2024.

Between the lines: McDonald's CEO Chris Kempczinski said during an investor event Wednesday that CosMc's is designed to fill afternoon sales slumps and get into the "attractive and fast-growing" specialty coffee business.

CosMc's menu

The CosMc's spinoff is named after a space alien character that McDonald's introduced in the 1980s.

What's happening: McDonald's said in a news release that the menu "is rooted in beverage exploration, with bold and unexpected flavor combinations, vibrant colors and functional boosts."

  • The menu includes specialty lemonades and teas, blended beverages and cold coffee and customizations from popping boba, flavor syrups to energy and Vitamin C shots.
  • Drink items are Cherry Energy Slush, Tropical Spiceade, S'mores Cold Brew, Churro Frappe and Tumeric Spiced Latte.
  • McDonald's said a few of its classic food items are on the menu, along with a Spicy Queso Sandwich, Creamy Avocado Tomatillo Sandwich and Pretzel Bites.

McDonald's chicken wraps

Meanwhile, McDonald's said Wednesday that it was planning to offer its McCrispy chicken in nearly all of its markets around the world by the end of 2025.

  • The release said there were also plans "to expand McCrispy into wraps and tenders."

Flashback: McDonald's cut its chicken snack wraps from the menu about seven years ago. Business Insider reports.
