Kentucky Derby winner Rich Strike will not be competing in the Preakness Stakes race, its owner Rick Dawson announced Thursday.

Why it matters: The withdrawal means there will not be a winner of the Triple Crown this year.

Background: The Triple Crown refers to the three major horse races, the Kentucky Derby, the Preakness Stakes and the Belmont Stakes.

Details: Rich Strike will be withdrawn in order to get ready for the Belmont Stakes in June.

What they're saying: "We thank the wonderful Preakness & Pimlico folks that have reached out to us and very much appreciate the invite," Dawson said in the statement.
