Apple makes lower iPhone battery price effective immediately

Aiming to further stem controversy over how it handles aging iPhone batteries, Apple said Saturday that its lower replacement price will go into effect immediately, rather than in late January.

"We expected to need more time to be ready, but we are happy to offer our customers the lower pricing right away," Apple said in a statement to Axios. "Initial supplies of some replacement batteries may be limited."

Why it matters: Apple faces multiple lawsuits over the issue, and has been under intense criticism for slowing down some older phones. The company said earlier this week that it would cut the price of replacement batteries from $79 to $29, at least until the end of 2018 and update the iPhone software to be clearer on battery status.
