Tyson Foods is recalling some 8.5 million pounds of frozen, fully cooked chicken for possible listeria contamination, the company and the U.S. Department of Agriculture announced Saturday night.

Driving the news: The CDC issued a food safety alert Saturday after some of Tyson's products were linked to a listeria outbreak that caused three hospitalizations and one death.

  • The items being recalled were produced from Dec. 26 to April 13 at a plant in Dexter, Missouri, and contain the establishment code P-7089.
  • They were distributed nationwide to retailers and institutions including hospitals, nursing facilities, restaurants, schools and Department of Defense locations, per a statement from the USDA's Food Safety and Inspection Service.

What they're saying: Scott Brooks, senior vice president of food safety and quality assurance at Tyson Foods, said in a statement, "We are taking this precautionary step out of an abundance of caution and in keeping with our commitment to safety."
