President Biden speaks at the White House during a virtual event with U.K. Prime Minister Boris Johnson on Wednesday. Photo: Win McNamee/Getty Images

President Biden plans to host British Prime Minister Boris Johnson at the White House next week, according to people familiar with the preparations.

Why it matters: Rewarding Johnson with a White House visit is another indication that the two leaders plan to work collaboratively on COVID-19, China and climate change.

  • The meeting, scheduled for early next week, will be part of a busy week of diplomacy for Biden as he also prepares to host a COVID-19 summit on the sidelines of the United Nations' annual gathering.
  • Biden also is to host the leaders of Australia, India and Japan on Sept. 24 at the White House for a meeting of the so-called Quad alliance.

The big picture: Biden and Johnson worked closely at the G7 summit in Cornwall in June to convince other countries to adopt a unified approach to countering China's rising global influence. They're also working in close concert to prepare the climate summit in Glasgow in November.

  • Earlier today, Biden held a virtual meeting with Johnson and Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison to announce a new partnership to help Australia acquire nuclear-powered submarines.

The Biden administration on Thursday released a sweeping set of assessments on climate change's threat to national security and its role in fueling migration.

Why it matters: One of the key products, a formal National Intelligence Estimate on climate change, marks the first time all 18 elements of the U.S. intelligence community have released a consensus report on the topic.

Study: More infectious diseases inevitable due to climate change

Climate change is creating ideal conditions for infectious diseases to spread more quickly, according to The Lancet Countdown's annual climate report out Wednesday.

Why it matters: It's just one of the increasingly urgent threats to human health emerging from global climate change.

The big picture: Climate studies show that extreme weather events — such as more powerful hurricanes, heavier rainstorms, larger wildfires and hotter and longer-lasting heat waves — are worsening worldwide due to the burning of fossil fuels for energy, Axios' Andrew Freeman reports.

  • These events have had serious impacts on the health of entire regions and the vulnerable causing preventable deaths, food and water insecurity and the spread of infectious diseases.

Biden's ambassador nominee: "China is not an Olympian power"

President Biden's nominee to serve as ambassador to China delivered a stark assessment of the challenges the U.S. faces in confronting Beijing, but stressed that the rising superpower is "not all-powerful" and the West retains "substantial" advantages.

The big picture: Nicholas Burns, a retired career diplomat and former U.S. ambassador to NATO, used his confirmation hearing Wednesday to echo the growing bipartisan consensus that China poses "the greatest threat to the security of our country and the democratic world" in the 21st century.
