Nike is shutting down its Oregon Project track program

Nike announced is shuttering its athletic training and track program, the Nike Oregon Project, just two weeks after head coach Alberto Salazar was banned from the sport by the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency for trafficking banned substances, Runner's World reports.

Why it matters: Nike's Oregon Project made American distance running competitive and produced a number of Olympic and world champions since opening in 2001. Shutting it down jeopardize's America's future in distance events.

Investigation into Trump-Russia probe continues to grow

A federal investigation closely supervised by Attorney General William Barr — which aims to inspect origins of the Trump-Russia probe — has interviewed "about two dozen and current F.B.I. officials," the New York Times reports.

Why it matters: The investigation, which is essentially looking into claims that the FBI's probe into President Trump's 2016 campaign was influenced by anti-Trump sentiments, is further along than previously reported.

As the U.S. carries out a sudden, near-total withdrawal from Syria, Russia is rushing into the breach.

Why it matters: The hasty U.S. exit from Syria makes it certain the outcome there will bear Vladimir Putin’s imprint. Russia entered Syria in 2015 to help dictator Bashar al-Assad regain his grip on the country, and Russia has steadily gained influence in the wider Middle East.
