Cybercriminals linked to the hacker group allegedly responsible for an attack on meatpacker JBS have struck again.

Catch up quick: The hackers infiltrated businesses large and small in at least 17 countries, according to Aryeh Goretsky, a cybersecurity researcher with ESET.

By the numbers: Researchers are still determining the full extent of the damage, but here’s what we know so far:

  • The malicious actors claim that 1 million computers have been affected — although that's likely "an enormous overestimate," per WSJ.
  • The ransom for a global fix is $70 million, or anywhere between $25,000 and $5 million apiece if victims want to pay separately.

The criminals facilitated their global attack largely through software made by Kaseya

  • Up to 1,500 firms in Kaseya’s customer chain were impacted, CEO Fred Voccola tells Reuters.

Businesses around the globe are dealing with another big ransomware attack, linked to the Russia-connected REvil group that previously hacked meat processor JBS.

Catch up quick: The new attack exploits a flaw in software that middleware provider Kaseya supplied to customers, who are themselves companies that provide managed services to other businesses.

Russia-linked hackers suspected in this weekend's mass attack on software provider Kaseya, which could affect thousands of companies worldwide, demanded $70 million to restore data they are holding for ransom, Reuters reports.

Why it matters: The hack is the latest and most dramatic in a series of high-profile ransomware attacks this year, exposing the pandemic-style threat that this type of cybercrime poses to companies and governments around the world.

A U.S. airstrike in northwest Syria on Friday killed senior al-Qaeda leader Abdul Hamid al-Matar, U.S. Central Command said in a statement.

Why it matters: Syria serves as a "safe haven" for the extremist group to plan external operations, according to U.S. Army Maj. John Rigsbee.
