Pentagon Force Protection Agency Chief Woodrow Kusse said an officer was attacked at a transit station outside the Pentagon on Tuesday morning, gunfire was exchanged between the suspect and law enforcement and multiple people were injured.

The latest: "PFPAOficial mourns the tragic loss of a Pentagon Officer killed during this morning's incident at the Pentagon," the Pentagon Force Protection Agency tweeted Tuesday evening. "Our thoughts and prayers are with the Officer's family.

  • The Pentagon Transit Center was closed again Tuesday evening after an earlier lockdown.

The big picture: The headquarters of the U.S. military went under temporary lockdown after multiple shots were fired. The area reopened after being secured, though the station remains closed, according to the Pentagon Force Protection Agency.

What they're saying: Kusse at a press conference Tuesday afternoon said the officer was attacked at about 10:35 a.m. ET on a Metro bus platform.

  • He added the FBI is leading an investigation into the attack and did not disclose the number of people injured but cited "several casualties."
  • "The Pentagon and the Pentagon reservation are safe and secure," he said, noting there is no active search for a suspect.

Editor's note: This story has been updated with details throughout including the death of an identified Pentagon police officer.

Last soldier out

How it ended: This image, made through a night-vision scope, shows the final American soldier to depart Afghanistan after America's longest war.

Other drug companies want to help make the vaccines

Generic drug companies have asked Pfizer, Moderna and Johnson & Johnson to license their COVID-19 vaccine technology to help increase global production, but so far the vaccine makers have given them the cold shoulder.

Why it matters: Other companies are saying they have extra capacity to make more vaccines. Not using that extra capacity could prolong the pandemic throughout the world.

House passes $768 billion defense spending bill

The House approved a $768 billion National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) for the 2022 fiscal year in a bipartisan 316-113 vote on Thursday.

Why it matters: The annual bill, which authorizes Pentagon spending levels and guides policy for the department, would require women to register for the military draft, among other provisions.
