Flora Duffy bagged Bermuda's first-ever Olympic gold medal after winning the women's triathlon at the Tokyo Games on Tuesday morning local time.

The big picture: Bermuda, with a population of 63,000, is also the "smallest nation or territory to win an Olympic gold medal," NPR notes.

  • The win by Duffy, who trains in Boulder, Colorado, marks only the Olympic second medal ever for Bermuda, after boxer Clarence Hill won bronze at the 1976 Montreal Games.
  • The 33-year-old double triathlon world champion finished the swimming, cycling and running course in 1 hour, 55:36 minutes — over a minute and 14 seconds ahead of Great Britain's Georgia Taylor-Brown, who won silver. Team USA's Katie Zaferes won bronze.

Of note: Duffy is one of two athletes representing Bermuda in Japan, the other being rower Dara Alizadeh.

Go deeper: Weightlifter Hidilyn Diaz wins the Philippines' first Olympic gold

Editor's note: This article has been updated with new details, including the facts that Bermuda is the smallest nation or territory to win and Olympic gold and that Duffy trains in Colo.

Manny Pacquiao announced Wednesday his retirement from boxing ahead of his run for president of the Philippines next year.

The big picture: The 42-year-old, who's also a Philippines senator, said in a video posted on his Facebook page that it's "difficult for me to accept that my time as a boxer is over." Pacquiao won 12 world titles in a 72-fight career, with 62 wins. He's the only boxer ever to win titles in eight different weight divisions.

A pillar of Democrats' plans to speed deployment of zero-carbon electricity is likely to be cut from major spending and tax legislation they are struggling to move on a party-line vote, per multiple reports and a Capitol Hill aide.

Driving the news: The New York Times, citing anonymous congressional aides and lobbyists, reports that West Virginia Sen. Joe Manchin (D) has told the White House he "strongly opposes" the Clean Electricity Performance Program.
