🇺🇸 Happy Friday! Memorial Day weekend is upon us. Enjoy the time with family and friends, and of course, enjoy the sports! See you back here on Tuesday.
Today's word count: 2,393 words (9 minutes)
Let's sports...
1 big thing: ⛳️ The rise of Rose
Photo: Christian Petersen/Getty Images
Rose Zhang. Get to know the name.
Driving the news: The Stanford sophomore made history this week, becoming the first women's golfer to win consecutive national titles.
- Zhang, who turned 20 on Wednesday, also tied World Golf Hall of Famer Lorena Ochoa's NCAA record for wins in a season (8) and career (12).
- Her 12 wins broke a Stanford record for men and women, a mark previously held by someone you may be familiar with: Tiger Woods.
Context: This is just the latest milestone for Zhang, who has already swept the most important amateur titles. She won the U.S. Women's Amateur in 2020 at age 17, the U.S. Girls' Junior in 2021 and the Augusta National Women's Amateur this April, where she broke the scoring record.
- The California native set the NCAA single-season scoring average record as a freshman (69.68), and she was even better this year (68.81). Is it any surprise that Adidas made her its first NIL athlete?
- Zhang has been No. 1 in the World Amateur Golf Ranking for nearly three years, longer than any player in history. She's now expected to forgo her final two years of NCAA eligibility and move on to professional golf.
What they're saying: "She's the absolute GOAT," Stanford coach Anne Walker told Golf Digest this week. "She is the best amateur of all time."

The big picture: Many expected Zhang to turn pro directly out of high school, which is what phenoms like Lydia Ko, Nelly Korda and Lexi Thompson did before her. But Zhang chose the college route, mirroring the path typically taken by her male counterparts.
- It's rare for male phenoms to bypass college golf. Look no further than the world's top four players: No. 1 Scottie Scheffler played four years at Texas, No. 2 Jon Rahm played four years at Arizona State and No. 4 Patrick Cantlay played two years at UCLA.
- But on the women's side, only one player in the top 20 played college golf (No. 11 Céline Boutier played four years at Duke). If Zhang succeeds at the next level, perhaps more players will follow her lead in the future — especially now that NIL money is in play.
The bottom line: In 1996, a Stanford sophomore turned pro after dominating the college ranks and went on to become an all-time great. 27 years later, history may be repeating itself.
2. 🏀🏒 Celtics, Stars stay alive
Photo: Maddie Meyer/Getty Images
The Celtics dismantled the Heat, 110-97, on Thursday in Boston to force a Game 6 and move within two games of becoming the first team in NBA history to win a series after trailing 3-0.
- By the numbers: The Celtics had four 20-point scorers in Derrick White (24), Marcus Smart (23), Jayson Tatum (21) and Jaylen Brown (21). The Heat had zero.
- State of play: No NBA team has ever come back from 3-0 down to win a series (0-150), and only three have even forced a Game 7. Game 6 is tomorrow night in Miami and Game 7, if necessary, would be Monday in Boston.

The Stars beat the Golden Knights, 3-2 (OT), on Thursday in Dallas to avoid a sweep and keep their season alive.
- The hero: Joe Pavelski scored the game-winner in front of a raucous home crowd. The 38-year-old American leads all active players in postseason goals with 73.
- State of play: Only four NHL teams have come back from 3-0 down to win a series: the 1942 Maple Leafs (def. Red Wings in Stanley Cup Final), 1975 Islanders (def. Penguins in quarterfinals), 2010 Flyers (def. Bruins in semis) and 2014 Kings (def. Sharks in first round).
3. 💵 Survey: College-age betting
Illustration: Brendan Lynch/Axios
More than half of college-age Americans are betting on sports, including two-thirds of those living on college campuses, per survey results released Wednesday by the NCAA, Axios' Jeff Tracy writes.
By the numbers: The survey, commissioned by new NCAA president Charlie Baker and conducted last month, polled 3,527 people in the U.S. aged 18-22.
- 58% of respondents have participated in at least one sports betting activity, which includes both daily and season-long fantasy sports.
- 67% of on-campus students have bet on sports, and 63% recall seeing advertising for sportsbooks, which the NCAA notes is higher than the general population's rate.
State of play: As legal sports betting surges nationwide, the NCAA wants to "better understand what student-athletes are experiencing on their campuses … so we can best help them deal with [its] potentially disruptive dynamic," Baker said Wednesday.
The backdrop: This survey comes in the wake of three recent college sports betting scandals, illustrating why Baker is so keen to get a better grasp of the environment.
- Alabama baseball coach Brad Bohannon was fired earlier this month amid an investigation into potential match-fixing.
- Over 40 athletes at Iowa and Iowa State are under investigation for violating NCAA gambling rules, which prohibit athletes from betting on any sports — college or pro — in which the NCAA conducts a championship.
- It doesn't appear those athletes engaged in match-fixing, but beyond breaking the rules, some of them may have broken the law: Iowa is among the 27 states where you must be at least 21 to legally wager on sports.
What to watch: The NCAA said it will conduct an athlete-only survey later this year — the first since 2016, two years before the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act's repeal paved the way for legal sports betting. At that time, 24% of male athletes and 5% of female athletes said they wagered on sports. Something tells me the updated numbers will be slightly higher.
4. ⚡️ Lightning round

⛳️ Trump hosts LIV: Former President Donald Trump played in Thursday's pro-am ahead of the LIV Golf event this weekend at Trump National Golf Club outside Washington, D.C. "They want to use my properties because they're the best properties," Trump said Thursday.
⚾️ Another bomb: Pete Alonso went yard again for his MLB-leading 19th bomb. That ties his own Mets record for the most HR before June, and it's four more than anyone else has this season (Marlins DH Jorge Soler and Dodgers 3B Max Muncy are tied for second with 15).
🇺🇸 White House visits: President Biden and the first lady will host college basketball national champions LSU (women) and UConn (men) at the White House today.
🏈 The Deion effect: Colorado sold 11,273 single-game football tickets on Wednesday, the largest one-day total in team history. The school has already sold out its season-ticket allotment for the first time since 1996.
5. ⚽️ Premier League: The finale

The 2022-23 Premier League season comes to an end Sunday, with all 20 teams in action at the same time.
State of play: Manchester City have already sealed a third consecutive league title, and Arsenal, Manchester United and Newcastle have clinched the other three Champions League spots.
- The drama is at the bottom of the table, where Everton, Leicester City and Leeds United are all fighting for their Premier League lives.
- The bottom three clubs get relegated to the second flight of English soccer, and last-place Southampton have already sealed their fate.
The intrigue: Nothing less than a win will do for Leicester and Leeds, and even that may not be enough. For Everton, a win would be enough — but dropping points could leave them vulnerable.
Schedule (all 11:30am ET kickoffs):
- Everton vs. Bournemouth
- Leeds vs. Tottenham
- Leicester City vs. West Ham
- Man United vs. Fulham
- Brentford vs. Man City
- Chelsea vs. Newcastle
- Arsenal vs. Wolves
- Aston Villa vs. Brighton
- Crystal Palace vs. Nottingham Forest
- Southampton vs. Liverpool

6. 🏈 Commanders trademark denied
Illustration: Brendan Lynch/Axios
Washington's professional football team has had three names since 2019. A fourth could soon be on its way, Jeff writes.
Driving the news: The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office has denied the Commanders' trademark application, citing the existence of one similar trademark and the prior applications of two others.
- The Commanders' Classic is already registered for the annual Army-Air Force football game.
- Martin McCaulay, a fan who's made a habit of squatting on trademarks for potential names, filed "Washington Wolf Commanders" and "Washington Space Commanders" in 2021.
State of play: Without a registered trademark, the Commanders "may find it more difficult, if not impossible, [to enforce the sale of unlicensed goods], which in turn could mean less revenue," trademark attorney Josh Gerben told USA Today.
- The team's most likely next step is to file an appeal with the USPTO, arguing that there wouldn't be any consumer confusion between their name and the other trademarks.
- According to his attorney, McCaulay "has no intention to stand in the way."
The bottom line: The Daniel Snyder era has been littered with bad teams and worse headlines. And even as a sale to new owners nears completion, the franchise can't seem to escape head-scratching stories like this.

8. ⛳️ The Ocho: Park golf

Park golf is like a hybrid of golf and croquet, Jeff writes.
Details: The sport was invented in Hokkaido, Japan, in 1983, by elderly golfers who still wanted to play but felt 18 holes of real golf was too physically taxing.
- Holes are never longer than 110 yards, and there's just one club with 0-degree loft that looks like a cross between a driver and a putter.
- Balls are made of plastic resin and are the size of a pool cue ball, and holes are 8 inches in diameter.
- Narrow fairways and short holes make the game more about accuracy than distance, so players take smaller, croquet-like backswings.
State of play: The game remains incredibly popular in Japan, where millions of "parkers" play at roughly 1,000 courses nationwide.
- It's also popular in Korea, Thailand, Brazil, Denmark and Sweden.
- In 2020, the game made landfall in the States, and there are now two courses: one outside Buffalo, and another outside Columbus.

Trivia answer: 2.5 miles
Trivia correction: Yesterday's trivia question should have specified that it was asking how many college football teams *in the Power Five* have active streaks of at least 10 consecutive winning seasons.
